A LOCAL company is finally able to talk about a top secret project that saw one of its products take centre stage at the Olympic Games opening ceremony.
Over 4.5 billion people worldwide watched the three-hour spectacular, which was staged in front of a live audience of 72,000.
While people looked on in awe as five Olympic rings were set alight and floated on a massive lake in the centre of the Greek Olympic Stadium, staff at DRC Polymers heaved a sigh of relief. The Soham-based company had supplied the 5,000 square metres of polypropylene that lined the lake. Managing Director Ken Bray, said: “The eyes of the world were on our product and our hearts were in our mouths when the lake filled up, hoping it wouldn’t spring a leak!” But Bray was also worried about other types of leak associated with the order. “The ceremony was hush hush and we had to sign a confidentiality contract to ensure that no details about the ceremony were made public.” DRC, which supplies plastic and rubber sheets for a wide range of industrial applications, supplied the polypropylene in rolls that were then welded together in Athens. “The polypropylene was manufactured to withstand climatic changes and even had to be a specific colour to make it suitable for television!” adds Bray. “Although it was quite a straightforward job for us, it was pretty exciting watching the ceremony.”
