Background
During the Foot and Mouth outbreak of 2001, Cumbria Waste Management (CWM) accepted carcasses and other arisings from infected sites and managed the burial of carcasses within selected cells. Consequently, leachate flows and loads from the cells increased substantially. MWH Constructors designed and constructed treatment plants to manage the increased loadings and decided on upgrading existing facilities at the Flusko Pike site. This entailed amongst other items, the installation of additional aeration equipment to existing leachate lagoons.
In order to maintain optimum leachate processing conditions it was important to maintain efficient operating temperatures within the open lagoons and MWH, after visiting existing DRC Installations, evaluated DRC's modular Floating Covers as the most cost effective system.

System The system comprises of a series of bespoke modules which are interconnected to form a large covered area. The modules can either be installed to an empty lagoon, or interconnected and "floated" into position on an existing filled lagoon. The modules are manufactured from DRC's Hylam FPA, a Flexible Polypropylene Alloy which encapsulates a rigid insulation medium to create a buoyant connectable pontoon. The system incorporates a network of anchors that allow the cover to rise & fall with the lagoon levels whilst resisting wind uplift forces. The system gives good thermal retention properties and requires no electro-mechanical components.
An optional gas collector membrane can be installed should anaerobic digestion be considered which incorporates a network of gas collector pipes to harvest biogas production.
